Congratulations

My lovely and talented daughter Leandra took the picture on the cover of this month’s Alabama Gardener Magazine – very exciting.

Additional congratulations to her for getting a job. It may just be temporary, but it’s a start. Thanks to all who sent well wishes.

Cestrum ‘Orange Peel’, yarrow, Achillea ‘Gold Plate’, Russian sage, Perovskia abrotanaides ‘Caspian’.I’m congratulating myself for such a lovely picture. It would be nicer if there were more of that orange butterfly weed in front, but instead, hiding in the garden, there are more big, fat bunnies. The other orange flower is Cestrum ‘Orange Peel’. Also shown are a yellow spider daylily, yellow yarrow, Achillea ‘Gold Plate’, blue/violet Russian sage, Perovskia abrotanaides ‘Caspian’ and the purple shrub is Loropetalum ‘Purple Diamond’.

Butterfly weed, Asclepias

One of Dale's busy bees on the butterfly weed.

Tip: You can grow butterfly weed from seed, but it has to have a cold treatment. The instructions on the seed packet had me plant them lightly, and then put the pot in a plastic bag and put it in the fridge for six weeks. But next time, I think I’ll follow Jan Midgley’s recommendation of a cold, dry storage for 4-6 months. That seems easier.

Bee keeper

Congratulations to Dale for giving the girls a happy home. I'm hoping to write an article about our experience as first year beekeepers.

I can’t end a post titled ‘Congratulations’ without congratulating my sweet son Jesse for winning the ‘Best Boy Butt’ contest at the Birmingham Aids Outreach Poker Run. However, I will not be posting pictures of his Chippendale moves. It feels a little odd to be proud of such an accomplishment, but what I’m most proud of is that he didn’t shake it for the money; he shook it for the joy of the shaking. When he heard, “You won $1700.” He didn’t hesitate at all, “I’ll donate it back to BAO.”

Blue, that is so sweet, thank you, but you’re wrong…unless…maybe my “Do as I say, not as I do” approach is finally working.
