Conflicting Opinions

Tomato plantI’ve mentioned before that I receive many different garden magazines. Recently I noted a conflicting opinion. One article said the birds had picked all the pesky bugs from their tomato vines. A different article said the pesky birds were eating their tomatoes. I’ve been curious about this incongruity. Who is right? Today, when I noticed, what looked like a female cardinal perch on my tomato stakes, I paid close attention. She hopped up and down the vine for about 10 minutes, and then went to the next bed and did the same. After she left, I looked for damage. I didn’t see any.

Here’s my unscientific analysis: If you are an organic gardener, (like me) you have many bugs. Bugs are more delicious than tomatoes – I’m assuming that’s what the birds think, but I have the opposite opinion – so the birds will be your friend and eat the bugs. However, if you are the type of gardener who uses insecticides on a regular basis, bugs are probably not pests because you poisoned them. In this case, birds will eat your tomatoes and become pests. Maybe you should rethink your strategy.

I wrote those first two paragraphs about a week ago. Soon after that my huge tomato plant started wilting and then it was blown over in the big storm on Monday. I propped it back up, but the wilt got much worse, so on Thursday I harvested 16 pounds of green tomatoes. That’s OK because I still have 11 more tomato plants. I normally would not plant so many, but I asked Dale to get 2 at the Blooming Fest last spring, and he came home with 5 and a cockamamie story about how 5 was as cheap as 2. If he wanted me to plant extra tomatoes he could have just asked.

I'm leaving the bells to get red.

It’s the same song second verse with the peppers, asked for 2, and got 5. So now I have 4 bells, 4 jalapenos, 3 bananas, and these odd cowhorns that look like they’re having sexy time on my table. I’d never seen a cowhorn before. Mine is spicy, hotter than the jalapenos. My neighbor says they are usually not that hot, and someone with a very hot temper planted the seed.

I’m not sure if that’s a peck of peppers, but I’m going to pickle some following these instructions from the Colorado State University Extension.

  1. I found your blog on Facebook! I think the Backyard Diva’s posted the funnel planters there! Love that idea, as I seem to have ready access to ‘junk’ and love old looking stuff!

You have a beautiful and interesting blog, and I’ve bookmarked it to come back! I have a reasonably green thumb, but I don’t seem to be terribly talented at putting groupings together!

    Have a great week!
